PARENT GUIDELINES

This document outlines guidelines for parents that may be reviewed and updated annual. Parent guidelines will be shared with parents on the website and used as a reference source of truth for all staff for any questions related to our policies and procedures.

Attendance

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class. Only registered students will receive attendance credit. A record of attendance will be maintained throughout the academic year (Sept through May). If your child arrives late, he/she will not receive attendance for the class. If you believe your child did not receive credit for attending class, please contact the respective teachers on that day and ensure his/her credit for attendance. Attendance credits will be strongly considered for roles in annual events including Annual Function and other school wide opportunities.

Auditing Class

Your child may audit up to 3 classes after which the child will be required to register for the school if interested. A child that is not registered will not get attendance credit and cannot participate in any Hindu School event.

Age of Child

Your child will be assigned to a class based on the grade your child will be entering in the upcoming school year. (See Grade-based Class Assignment below). Your child has to be 3 years old as of the date of registration of the school year in order to enroll. Our past experience suggests that children younger than three years old have not developed the necessary attention span to enjoy our class.

Class Timing

Classes will start promptly at 10:30 am and students have to be in the classroom before class start time. Students who arrive after 10:30 a.m. will not receive attendance. If a parent chooses for a student to attend class despite being late and without attendance credit, a parent must physically accompany the student to the classroom. A parent should not drop off a child at the temple entrance door and expect that the student will be in class because a tardy student may not be allowed to attend class that day and whether a tardy student is allowed to attend class is at the class teacher’s discretion.

It is a parent’s responsibility to be with your child until such time a decision is made. HSKY teachers or staff are not responsible for children left unattended on the temple premises without adult parent supervision. Class timing varies from 60 mins to 75 mins based on age of child. It is a parent’s responsibility to drop off and pick up students on time. So, plan to arrive a few minutes early to meet the schedule.

Parent Involvement

We are a 100% volunteer-driven organization. All fees collected after any operating costs goes towards the Hindu Temple of KY. The quality and quantity of our academic offerings are greatly impacted by parental engagement. We need parents to get involved and support the teaching teams and support staff throughout the school year. Here are specific changes to parent involvement policies starting 2025-2026.

Parent Attendance in Class

  • For children who are in Pre-k , it is MANDATORY that a parent is physically present in class with the student through the entire class instruction time.

  • For children in Grades K-3, parents sign up to rotate to attend a minimum of 1-2 classes in the year.

  • For children in grades 4 and above, parents are encouraged to attend class. Teachers may call parents on an as-needed basis for assistance. If you receive a call for help, please step up.

Class Parent

  • Parents are encouraged to sign up as class parent(s) to support teaching staff.

  • Parents will be called upon to help HSKY staff throughout the year and are expected to volunteer a minimum of 1-2 hours a month to support the school.

  • Parents are expected to review and understand HSKY school and class expectations, disciplinary and operating guidelines and abide by them.

Parent Planning Committee (PPC)

  • Parents are encouraged to sign up for the New Parent Planning Committee that will be responsible for planning and supporting HSKY staff with events year-round, including Saraswati Puja, Annual Function, Picnic, etc.

  • The PPC will be responsible to assist HSKY Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting and engaging parents to support HSKY activities.

Grade-based Class Assignment

At the time of registration, children will be assigned to a certain class based on the grade they will be entering that Academic year. Children will be in that class through their attainment of a grade set for the next class level. Transfer to the next class will be made annually when students become eligible for the next grade level.

Communications

To enable parents and teachers to stay in touch and maintain contact with one another and for your children to develop a lasting friendship with their fellow-mates, the Hindu School will maintain a school registration list which will contain contact information including Name, Phone number and Email address. It is the PARENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to ensure the accuracy of your contact information, INCLUDING EMAIL, PHONE NUMBERS. All communications from Hindu School will be via email or WhatsApp. If your contact info changes, please inform the HSKY administrator or your teacher

Fees

EACH CHILD who attends Hindu School will be charged a REGISTRATION fee to cover materials that the school purchases for projects through the academic year. In addition, those children interested in participating in school events such as Saraswathi Puja, Annual Function or other events will be charged an additional nominal fee, which may be subject to change based on projected expenses for that year. Any other item purchased for the independent use of a child during events will be your responsibility.

Curriculum

Hindu School Curriculum will be based on our copyrighted publication and prescribed theory and portions outlined by the school program coordinators and teaching staff

Annual Function

Annually, the Hindu School students may present to family, friends and the public an evening of dance, drama, learning and fun. Participation in this Annual Event is VOLUNTARY! As mentioned above, a child’s attendance will be a factor along with a child’s ability to perform, interest to perform and affinity to the stage left up to the discretion of the teachers and coordinators. The purpose of the Annual function is to provide our children an opportunity to display their talents and expose them to teamwork, commitment and stage performance. Students interested in participating will be asked to register for this event along with a nominal fee to cover the cost of running the event. Parental engagement and cooperation is crucial for success of the Annual function. HSKY has discretion to modify, or cancel this event for any reason, including lack of support or parent involvement at any time.

Shloka Competition

The Hindu School students will participate/compete in our Annual Shloka Competition, which is once again VOLUNTARY. Participation in Shloka Competition is strongly recommended to maximize learning. Only students who have attended a minimum of 4 classes during the current school year are eligible to compete in the Shloka Competition.
